Blog: Leave the car at home for World Car Free day!

As part of our month long active travel campaign were supporting World Car Free day, this Friday. During the 22nd of September we are encouraged to ditch the car, and think of other ways to get from A to B.

By reducing journeys made by car we can reduce carbon emissions and benefit from cleaner air in Surrey.

Why go car free?

The main idea is simply to avoid using your car wherever possible. Opting to leave the car at home has many great benefits as it provides a great opportunity to increase your physical activity and boost your mental health/ well being. Whether you choose to take a walk or jump on a bike, you’ll soon feel the buzz.

The benefits of World Car Free day are felt throughout the world, especially in big cities and built-up areas where air quality is most improved. Some of these benefits are saving money and reduce in congestion which reduces idling and also reduces accidents.

Getting active whilst using public transport

Don’t worry you can still get active by taking public transport, the walk to and from your local bus stop or train station will get you out and about. You could even get off the bus or train a stop or two early and walk the rest of the way to your destination. You’ll also be more relaxed as you won’t have to concentrate on the roads and could even squeeze in the next chapter of a good book or get ahead on your emails.

Our plan for active travel

Through our transport plan that we plan to support pedestrians by improving walking experiences in Surrey. Below are some of the ways were making travelling by foot better:

  • Separating routes for pedestrians and cyclists and creating convenient crossing facilities for pedestrians.
  • Prioritising walking routes across the county so that pedestrians are safer in town centres.
  • Extending and improving routes which will be much safer and sustainable and supporting facilities to make active travel easier.
  • Get rewarded for active travel

Sign up to the BetterPoints app where can get you rewarded for walking, cycling or using public transport instead of using your car. In the app, you earn points which can then be traded in for rewards such as physical/ online vouchers or choose to donate to charity.

Get involved as World Car Free day provides a great opportunity to boost health and well being as well as helping the environment by directly reducing carbon emissions and air pollution.
